This Week in Congress

Thursday, June 6th

House Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet holds a legislative hearing on H.R. 1123, the “Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.”  Although not an antitrust bill, the draft legislation, introduced by Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) with bipartisan support, would essentially restore the ability of consumers to unlock their mobile phones for use on a wireless carrier of their choosing.  While this practice had been previously legal, changes that went into effect in January of this year now makes such a practice illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
